Managed Service Providers (MSPs) have been an integral part of the IT ecosystem for a long time, and according to the latest TD SYNNEX Direction of Technology Report, MSPs are positioned for continued growth in the coming year.

MSPs refer to specialized organizations that assume responsibility for the management, monitoring, and maintenance of a client’s IT services, infrastructure and systems. They typically offer a comprehensive range of services for solutions and hardware, including network and connectivity, application management, infrastructure administration, cybersecurity software, contract management, system monitoring, technical support, troubleshooting, and more.

The significance of an MSP’s role in the technology ecosystem lies in their ability to provide businesses with a cost-effective and efficient solution for handling technology needs. Their relevance and utility play an increasingly important role in the technology industry, so today we’re checking in with the TD SYNNEX experts to learn more about MSPs as part of our Demystifying Series.

We sat down with John Phillips, Senior Vice President of the SMB and MSP Sales Team to learn more about MSPs, their role in the IT Ecosystem, and why they are a critical part of the industry.

What are MSPs and what do they do in the IT Ecosystem?

First, MSPs enable organizations to focus on their core competencies and serving their clients – why they went into business to begin with – by offloading the complexities of IT management. This allows businesses to dedicate more time and resources to strategic initiatives, innovation, and growth.

Second, MSPs also play a crucial role in enhancing cybersecurity. With the growing threat landscape, MSPs implement robust security measures, ensuring that client data and systems are protected against cyberattacks.

Third, MSPs contribute to improved operational efficiency by proactively monitoring and addressing issues before they escalate, minimizing downtime and disruptions. This proactive approach also results in better overall system performance.

Moreover, MSPs often provide scalable solutions, allowing businesses to adjust their IT services based on evolving needs and growth. This flexibility is particularly valuable in the dynamic landscape of the technology industry. In essence, MSPs act as strategic partners, aligning IT infrastructure with business objectives and delivering reliable and secure technology solutions, making them integral contributors to the success of organizations in the modern digital age.

Who are the different players in the IT ecosystem and how do MSPs play a role?

There are a lot of different players in the IT ecosystem, from the solutions aggregators – like TD SYNNEX – to Managed Service Providers. We’ve got a lot of software and hardware vendors who are also included in that ecosystem, along with cloud providers, security providers, hardware providers, and many more that all come together to create that infrastructure.

So as we look at MSPs, it comes down to a cost effective solution for small businesses to have their IT infrastructure in place and supported by MSPs. This not only provides peace of mind for these small businesses, but it helps them operate more efficiently as they focus on the business itself, whether they are a restaurant, dentist office, dry cleaner or anything else that supports their passion. The chances are they don’t know anything about networking or disaster, backup recovery or security or similar IT infrastructure issues, and that’s where the MSP comes into play and  helps out that small business.

Why are MSPs critical to the IT Ecosystem?

It really comes down to efficiency and expertise. MSPs provide a cost effective solution to businesses to help manage their IT infrastructure. They provide peace of mind to a business owner knowing that they have someone managing their IT needs, and issues if they arise.

These end users and businesses aren’t IT experts, and most don’t have experience buying the correct hardware and software or networking. So, again, that’s where an MSP comes into play to fill that gap and solve a very real need for businesses.

And they can do it consistently and reliably. MSPs provide all those services for clients each and every month, which can become very difficult for organizations trying to manage their IT infrastructure alone. Ultimately this is cost effective for the end user and enhances security for their business.

How do you see the role of MSPs evolving in the future?

I see them expanding as MSPs grow and take on more roles. With the growing danger of cyberattacks, which we hear about every single day in the media, businesses are adopting more and more technology in an ever-changing technology industry landscape, which means businesses need more support and the market opportunity for MSPs is going to expand.

What role does TD SYNNEX play related to MSPs?

Managed Service Providers are a type of IT reseller, and as a leading global IT solutions aggregator, the MSPs come to us because of the services and solutions we provide to end users. So, TD SYNNEX is an important part of the IT Ecosystem, especially as it relates to MSPs.

We provide support for MSPs, such as technical resources, product experts, supplemental help with professional services, access to the top industry vendors, and even a team that is focused solely on MSPs who understand their business. Our resources allow MSPs to scale and grow and have a much larger reach. At the end of the day, we enable MSPs to never have to say no.
